In PvE she can be a bit of a pain. EMP ammo for sansha's gives you 30 and bit + fall off while hunting angles with nuke ammo gives you 90 and a bit + fall off ranges. . . Unless you simply love the look of this ship, the Raven for PvE is superior to anything else out there period. And of course, a Abbadon does more dps and alpha, which takes away the only wow factor arti had. So, no speed, no dps, no alpha makes this ship sub par. If the ROF was a +damage, the alpha would become amazing even if the overall dps would drop like a rock. All in all, if you still insist on not using a Raven, the Typhoon is better. At least I will not try to kill you in my crow, while a Maelstorm is a walk in the park.
There's a fair amount in here that I would disagree with. You don't use EMP on Sanshas, you use Phased Plasma. The damage difference is small, PP loads more shots into the magazine and has a better optimal. Fusion is for use against Angels, you're effective with it out to about 70 to 75km with 2 tracking comps. Range for effective fire with PPL, again using two tracking comps is roughly 65km, give or take.
Rather than relying on quickfit or the like, I used my combat logs to calculate dps. The Mael came in at between 200 and 780 depending on range and target transversal when using 1200mm II, 2 tracking comps and 3 gyrostabilizers. Obviously given the wide dps range, pilot technique will determine to large extent whether this ship is gold, or garbage for missions. If you find it's garbage, don't blame the ship, it's being used incorrectly.
There is no battlecruiser I have run into on missions that makes it past 2 volleys. Some cruisers are one volley, some are 1.5. At a rate of fire of 7.5, that's 15 seconds until you are in the process of destroying your next target. Time to kill the Seraphims in WC4: 60 seconds, exactly, and I'm not yet at max artillery skill (spec 3). The ship has plenty of dps and alpha.
Artillery may have poor tracking by itself, but toss a web on the ship, and combine with tracking mods, you can hit close orbiting cruisers with no problem. By alternating between close orbiting targets and targets orbiting at 22 to 24km, you can engage the web on your next close target while hitting targets out further. The result, is zero down time waiting for the web to take effect. This also allows you to ignore webbing drones completely until you are ready to launch your drones to mop them up.
Versus a Raven, I can't say. I never made it past skill rank 3 with the ship, as I hated flying it. Maybe someone that does use one would like to share their fastest kill time on a 1.2 million isk bounty mission battleship like the Seraphim or on Draben (Vengeance final boss, my time- 1:30 with the Mael.) for comparison sake.
